DEER SOLUTIONS

GOT DEER DAMAGE?

Employing multiple deer defenses and deploying them on a well-timed schedule, year round, is the most effective strategy to protect your landscape investment.

To know how to make deer want to eat your neighbor’s yard instead of your own— just kidding—it helps to first understand deer behavior. And while there’s no way to know which solution will be best for your situation, know this:

  • Fencing is the single best long-term solution
  • For your shrubs, a lower cost solution is to cover them with deer or bird netting.
  • In veggie gardens, some folks have good luck with a technique called sticking, which is basically pushing lots of light, 3-4 foot bamboo stakes into the area. Growing garlic, or casting dry minced garlic into the area can help, too.
  • Properly placed and expertly timed repellent applications generally work well to protect individual trees and shrubs. A repellent with putrified eggs is proven to be the most effective repellent. GET ON GARDEN-911’s SCHEDULE early to make sure these repellents are applied on time, over time, on your property.
  • Have realistic expectations. When winters are harsh, or deer populations are high, they will eat just about anything. And, they will taste almost anything at any time of year.
